A completely credible scenario, only fought by deterrence... The time chosen will be generally correct, given that Putin sees the political fragmentation of Europe as a fundamental help, and the longer he waits, the more difficult his action will be. Let's hope this won't be more than "a pessimistic scenario"!...
Thank you for this wake-up call. I do wish, as do many, many in the U.S., America would have more substantially helped Ukraine and that we would continue to do so and that Ukraine had been, or would be, admitted into NATO, regardless of Putin's threats. Afterall, it's not as if he will refrain from doing anything radical even if NATO and the U.S. do as he wants. I don't understand why NATO is standing so strong on this issue. Do you?
The threatening scenario you detail in this post seems all too possible and though I do believe your message is an important one, and worthy of heeding, I wish there would have been a way to portray the concern without laying out a specific plan - though you said it had been referenced elsewhere, publicly, in another setting, so there's that.
"Salami tactics" is interesting. It's like the story about the frog who immediately jumps out of boiling water, but if you turn up the heat gradually on the frog it doesn't sense the danger until it's too late.
I feel this is one method Trump is utilizing with us in the U.S., along with "flooding the zone" to keep people thinking it's not as bad as it is, and to keep us less reactionary. It seems to me if people would actually look at the TOTALITY of the inroads he's already made toward dismantling our democracy they would be more inclined to get involved. He's chipping away at our federal agencies, our economic foundations, our national and global security, our system of justice, our educational system and our media outlets - all while using fear, intimidation tactics and lawlessnesss and mostly getting some sideways glances and slaps on the wrist. If he succeeds in completing those efforts he's started we’re in deep, deep trouble. It's like water torture - drip, drip, drip. The water is rising, slowly, and the question is not whether or not we can build a dam high enough to hold back the water, but if we can recognize the moments long before the waters are over our heads.
Wholly agree. Beltway warriors from the Atlantic Council to the Center for European Security have their plates full. And societies from the former Warsaw Pact countries plus Ukraine all have their spokesmen in the US. All address the community of policy decision-makers.
But the job you mention is too big for that. It takes a focused effort to force the Russian threat to the attention of heartland Americans, often in red congressional districts. Are there any US-based efforts to do that? That's what it will take to garner political support that's ready when it's needed.
I've looked into it somewhat, and I don't think so. That's frightening. Please somebody here tell me I'm wrong.
It's so good to hear about the beltway warriors and others, as we can use help from all around the globe, for this is a very much an international crisis.
What's happening in the U.S. has been strategically planned for at least 20 years. In my opinion, a confluence of circumstances involving a disgruntled populous looking for a "savior " aligned with the arrival of a person with the exact makeup of Trump, in addition to the timing of important tax cuts expiring for the billionaire class created the perfect storm that we are now in. With the GOP Congress in fear for their very lives, should they do anything to undermine Trump's agenda, we're only inching our way out if this mess. The courts are right now where the all-important decisions about the Constitution are playing out, with Trump losing 96% of his cases, though our federal judges are facing death threats and intimidation regularly.
To your question, I honestly do not know, but I'm inclined to agree with your presumption or deduction. My ear is to the ground and I hear nothing about that. Our Secretary of State and our V.P. are they themselves a part of the tyrannical makeup, and the cabinet heads are all Trump's appointed people and their departments have largely been gutted of the normally- non- partisan employees. So I'm not sure what convoy or emissary there is to even be sent out.
The Administration is seemingly carrying out Project 2025 (900 pages) with ruthless fervor. There are the authors of that plan and other bad actors behind the scenes pulling strings of power, with lots of financial backing. I'm not sure even if the rest of the world knows how bad it's gotten or that it's looking to get. Being IN the pot myself, metaphorically speaking, though keeping as abreast of updates as possible, and disseminating as much news and hope to others as possible, while urging action, I realize I just might unaware that I'm actually getting slow-boiled!
The one thing I can say that DOES encourage me is that during the very first days of January the most common sentiments on substack were either disbelief, shock or confusion as well as a sense of helplessness, including those Dems in official capacities. I'm very glad to report there has been a significant shift out of those states and into action, though the actions have had limited, but a powerful impact when targeted on boycotting any businesses related to the tech broligarchies, for instance, Tesla, which had a bad downturn as a result. The U.S. Attorney General, put out a statement threatening to arrest anyone, in essence, who hurt Tesla, so it was gaining traction. The world over could help by also doing that along with boycotting Facebook, Instagram, What's App, MAGA-fostered FOXX News, PayPal, SpaceX, Amazon, Prime Video, buy local, and in stores to avoid supporting any extra shipping fees and tariffs on foreign goods. If they get us adjustments l accustomed to paying those tariffs they'll just continue. And it turned out no amount of human suffering was going to move the billionaires into a defensive action against Trump until the tariffs threatened their portfolios and only then did they get Trump to reverse/pause the tariffs. So the place to hit them is in their wallets.
There's no one organization actually running the protests, but 50501 (50 protests in 50 states on 1 day) has another big protest day coming up on June 14, but it's not "targeted" to protest actual businesses (storefronts or university campuses) so I'm not sure how much good it's going to do, except to dampen Trump's excitement of the military parade for the 250th anniversary of this nation's independence (which happens to also be occurring on Trump's birthday). A democratic country normally doesn't do this kind of military dog and pony show. It'll be the first of it's kind.
We're asking that no one show up for that, and instead make a large presence known at each of the 50 state protests.
I'm not sure what it will take to turn the tide unless Trump is found to be in contempt of court orders (which would be unprecedented) which is either just about to happen OR nothing will happen because the court(s) is/are too afraid of having THAT be their legacy. Cowards abound in our midst. They forget who and what they are her to serve.
We shall see. Wish us luck. I wish you the same. And may God bless us all!
As above: Is there a US-based NGO that tries to alert Americans to this threat facing not just Lithuania, but all of the former Soviet SSRs? If Putin conquers Ukraine, they are next -- and so is NATO and the EU.
Hi, Don! Putin conquering the Ukraine, in my opinion, is still a big IF. They've lasted 3 years longer than anyone anticipated. I knew the U.S. under Biden, at least, knew that yes, other democracies starting with Poland would be at great risk if Russia takes Ukraine. And having heard that Poland just elected a new conservative leader is concerning on that front.
However, as I indicated above I don't know of any US-based NGO serving in that capacity, but I'm not the most qualified person to answer that question.
I can tell you there are some Americans for some reason STILL having a tough time believing that even Trump is a danger to the U.S. citizens even after all he's done and tried to do to tear down our democracy. So there's that. However, I do imagine our military generals are quite aware of that possibility.
Why do you think it is important enough to ask about twice? Do you know of an organization that does that type of work? Are you suggesting that if those in red districts knew of this danger that they might become more engaged in defending their country borders and it's democracy?
It’s a poignant example but I think it’s an outdated one that shows how easy it to spin any scenario into a glorious victory. Easier said than done.
Finland would not be sidelined by something this provocative. They could launch a major offensive at the border and sweep back down to Lithuania under the exact same premise as Russia’s humanitarian mission, but the truth will be on their side, and typical Russian lies will be ignored by Europe
“We are sending troops in to stop this humanitarian disaster for our Baltic neighbors, whose legitimate government now in exile has invoked article 5 of NATOs charter. While the rest of NATO may choose indirect action in honoring their commitment, Finland must act decisively and we welcome those countries who would join us.”
Kaliningrad and St Petersburg ports are barricaded by NATO warships who already dominate the entire sea.
By the time Putin realizes what’s happening, the Fins are sweeping through Russian land. They tell the world that the encircled Russians are being uncooperative while the Kaliningrad people have chosen cooperation, and dissolve Russia’s Kaliningrad government.
Ukraine, sensing an incredible opportunity, sees Russias forces spread thinner than ever across their front line and pushes a new offensive aimed directly at Moscow.
Nobody comes to Russia’s direct aid, but North Korea and Iran continue sending arms, which isn’t enough to stop the bleeding. Putin sues for peace when it becomes clear, his rule cannot survive any other way.
Yes. No war plan survives first contact with the enemy.
I’m just trying to highlight that we can do anything that Russia can do. And we can do it with the element of surprise too, not to mention fresh troops.
Russia may feel that Europe is starting to catch up and they must strike now, but let’s not forget that 3 years ago, Russia was at full strength, and Europe was far weaker than it was today.
Russia’s best opportunity is long behind them. Not to say it won’t happen, but it would be the end of Putin.
I asked you about that because as I imagined it playing out I confused myself until thinking it was happening and my inner self was already feeling better.
Is there a US-based NGO that tries to alert Americans to this threat facing not just Lithuania, but all of the former Soviet SSRs? If Putin conquers Ukraine, they are next -- and so is NATO and the EU.
It's incredibly sad how so many in the West have bought into Russia having legitimate greavances that justify its invasion.
It's never been about protecting the Russian minority (they've suffered much more as a result of the war) or Ukraine wanting to join NATO. It's all about Putin's obsession with the resurrection of the USSR.
Ukraine being allowed to join NATO would give it the potential backing of the others in that conference, and would presumably send a signal to Putin that if he picks on one he picks in then all.
And I wholeheartedly disagree when you say "... so many in the West have bought into Russia having legitimate grievances." That is not a circulating sentiment or narrative. It MAY appear that way because at this moment we have a tyrannical leader in our country being extremely tolerant of Putin, if not defensive of him, BUT I ASSURE YOU that is not a consensus opinion. That is why we're doing everything we can to remove him from office.
From my best understanding, those that voted for Trump did so out of the false impressions and promises given them by him and the multi-pronged fears he successfully established via media channels, day by day, regarding the rising cost of goods and the "invasion of violent immigrants" taking over the country. People in fear lost site of the most important feature of the U.S., which many of us tried to preserve - it's Constitution and democratic processes.
Please note, Trump did not get about 50% of Americans to vote for him. He received about 50% of only those who actually voted. Many of those who DID vote for him now see him much more clearly and have turned against him; red districts are turning blue. And those that did not vote at all for whatever reason(s) now see the need to have done so, albeit late in the game. If a vote was taken tomorrow it would be a different result. The biggest problem is there's no obvious opposition candidate. And the Dems have to now prove they are not handling things in D.C. like it's business as usual - and they have been rallying to the moment. There's just some inertia they needed to combat.
Unfortunately, I see a ton of pro-Russian comments from Westerners on social media. Especially the Trump crowd. That's what I was basing my comment on. A lot of these could also be Russian bots but many aren't.
As for the outcome being different now because some people have realized who Trump really is... First of all, that's a hypothetical. Secondly, if people didn't realize who he was during this election I don't really know what to say. Especially after the Jan 6 schenanigans he pulled that nearly resulted in a banana republic where the losing candidate stays in office.
Lastly, there's not much you or the Dems can do now. You've lost the election badly and Trump also has majorities in both chambers of Congress. Elections have concequences and Dems totally screwed up by first running a very old Biden and then switching him to an obvious fraud like Kamala at the 11th hour. It doesn't really matter if over 50% of those who voted chose Trump. Only those who vote count. The rest relegate themselves to NPCs.
We, in the States, have mostly moved past the blame game and the “us vs. them” mentality. It is not lost on us how we got here, but we're now into finding solutions. We will re-invent the government as needed, as we move forward.
With Trump's unmistakable lawlessnesss surrounding his cruelty of immigrants, denying them due process and exiling them to strange, brutal foreign places, along with his attempts to destroy our Constitutional rights and our democracy and our economy, what I said about The People awakening to who he actually is, is not merely hypothetical, as you said.
It is predicted that about 30% of Trump's followers will never see him for who and what he is, no matter what, because they have turned his ideologies into what they now deem as "facts," however false they may be. It's full indoctrination - but they also just may be the ones who feel the need to be the most outspoken and extreme so they may APPEAR like a larger group to you than they are. It's ok if you decide to disagree with me and the conversion of hearts I've been watching unfold in states around me in special elections, as you're entitled to your experience and to your opinion.
Just know Trump's plan IS falling apart around him as I write this. Elon Musk and he are having a very public war of the words. I'm sure the news about it will reach you soon. I believe this kind of tweeted aggression amongst high-level government figures is unprecedented. Then again we've seen many firsts as of late.
Trump can keep trying to do his best to break us down, but WE will regain power. There is hope, and the justification for that hope is on its way. When WE, The People have right on our side, and we do, we will not stop until we win back the White House, and law and order are restored.
A completely credible scenario, only fought by deterrence... Credible and profoundly depressing to live through Europe once more sleep-walking into disaster
I can only imagine!
So let's try and keep everyone awake and engaged.
