A completely credible scenario, only fought by deterrence... The time chosen will be generally correct, given that Putin sees the political fragmentation of Europe as a fundamental help, and the longer he waits, the more difficult his action will be. Let's hope this won't be more than "a pessimistic scenario"!...

Thank you for this wake-up call. I do wish, as do many, many in the U.S., America would have more substantially helped Ukraine and that we would continue to do so and that Ukraine had been, or would be, admitted into NATO, regardless of Putin's threats. Afterall, it's not as if he will refrain from doing anything radical even if NATO and the U.S. do as he wants. I don't understand why NATO is standing so strong on this issue. Do you?

The threatening scenario you detail in this post seems all too possible and though I do believe your message is an important one, and worthy of heeding, I wish there would have been a way to portray the concern without laying out a specific plan - though you said it had been referenced elsewhere, publicly, in another setting, so there's that.

"Salami tactics" is interesting. It's like the story about the frog who immediately jumps out of boiling water, but if you turn up the heat gradually on the frog it doesn't sense the danger until it's too late.

I feel this is one method Trump is utilizing with us in the U.S., along with "flooding the zone" to keep people thinking it's not as bad as it is, and to keep us less reactionary. It seems to me if people would actually look at the TOTALITY of the inroads he's already made toward dismantling our democracy they would be more inclined to get involved. He's chipping away at our federal agencies, our economic foundations, our national and global security, our system of justice, our educational system and our media outlets - all while using fear, intimidation tactics and lawlessnesss and mostly getting some sideways glances and slaps on the wrist. If he succeeds in completing those efforts he's started we’re in deep, deep trouble. It's like water torture - drip, drip, drip. The water is rising, slowly, and the question is not whether or not we can build a dam high enough to hold back the water, but if we can recognize the moments long before the waters are over our heads.
