incredible ... A second season might not be forth coming - but Zeus's "World view" seems to be a very good fit for "You know who". In some way having a more modern / Cypriot setting allows one to get closer to the emotional truths of all these near eternal dynamics - than having to fiddle and phaff with "Historical accuracy" in a physical way. Sometimes that can be obstructive to a real story of the heart and fate and the fates.

In fencing two people who don't know each other and have to face off against each other without priori information have to make a very strange set of dances almost like two birds in a mating dance / female spider will eat the male mate after copulating and can you escape WITHOUT actually being eaten.

Fencer 2 ALSO has his or her own bestist A game but it's not the same as Fencer 1's 'A" game.

The goal being is to take away someone's A game (and there are many techniques for that) so that your opponent HAS to or is forced to use their weaker B game and one get's to use one's A game best strength and set of tactics against a theoretically "Better" opponent.

Here's the catch...

BOTH of the fencers (player 1 and player 2) generally don't want to give away or telegraph what each respective fencers A game actually is.
.
So there is a time limit and you have very little time to the principal task to try and find out what it IS that your opponent is wanting to do.
.
All the time - your opponent is trying to HIDE what they really want to do...
.
And because there is a non-combativity rule more recently introduced ( to me that really wrecked the game in Epee fencing)
.
You have to interact and be seen as fighting by the judge etc. (But the rules changed to make it more of a spectator sport as they thought two fencers NOT making cartoonish Erol Flyn type moves was bad for business especially when the two fencers face each other off making weird moves trying to psyche each other out and after five or ten minutes no one has made a hit <--- another example of money ruining what otherwise would have been an excellent sport.].

So you have to go through a whole bunch of moves to get the opponent to react and react instinctively to give glimmers as to what their A game in the context you provide is likely to be.

Your opponent is ALSO trying to trigger and find out what it is you are actually wanting to do...
.
All this probing to NOT give away or telegraph one's actual intentions...

That is until things really heat up.

This is why techniques that apply pressure to your opponent and then suddenly break off...

and then apply pressure again (almost within sticking distance/ "Opportunity" distance where one could have made the hit...)

And then break off - retreat ...

The opponent then get's so frustrated they strike out of distance and do something really stupid revealing their set of A game "material".

Usually some people's A game relies on bullying and if you mirror what they are doing (if they are being super aggressive) they are never used to being challenged that way they actually crumble <--- This is true (way beyond simple or stupid notions about bullies) it's more about familiarity of one's own practices - if you are more familiar and used to people cowering and running away you are MORE practiced at dealing with that ... If the opponent mirrors and copies a very aggressive (A game) style then that puts the 'bully" into an un-rehearsed or less well practiced set of moves --- put onto the back foot literally even if one is doing a really bad impression of your opponent's mirrored A game - it basically brings about a total reframe of the situation that the opponent can't deal with mainly due to lack of personal experience of having to "Deal" with that. A literal afront to their "Sensibilities".

THEN that's when you find your opponent is having to reach for their B game and they are not very well practiced at it... (There's a lot of theory that states that one should not even have a B game and one should full up into one's A game etc.).

That's when you fully apply your "A" game in brutal and clinical fashion.

Just and only - one example...

In the older rules one was able to remove one's arm completely, drop the weapon out of the opportunity volume and space, but instead hold the weapon close to the ground and close to the body so they - your opponents would have absolute no idea where you would be coming in from (especially with what's known as extremely efficient one move bell-guard technique that eliminates at least three moves. ) ...

[TBH some peeps that go into the military can have a bunch of screws loose that they had to begin with that only gets far worse from combat / high stress situations from endless rotations and crude training. In this case I think the dynamic was extreme familial abuse from the guy's father - having observed at a distance at another compettition. ].

Serious protracted assault ... but I just got up to my feet and came on guard and didn't bat an eyelid - and suggested (very calmly) we finish the bout - the score was 3 - 1. I got to my feet like one of those toys that has cylindrical base and plunger you push with your thumb and release so that the small puppet like figure (like Bullseye the horse from Pixar _Toy Story) comes to a stationary and erect position as if standing to attention from a previously sprawled out position with janky bits of loose string connecting each joint and piece of limb and torso all over the place. The USAF generally tends to have an 'Ego" problem and historically I have had much more in common with 'Peeps" in the Army, the Marines and especially Navy there's just something about the USAF that has them walking with an extra broom stick stuck up their crack - like a particular swagger that's just not really working out for them.

In some way having a more modern / Cypriot setting allows one to get closer to the emotional truths of all these near eternal dynamics - than having to fiddle and phaff with "Historical accuracy" in a physical way. In fencing two people who don't know each other and have to face off against each other without priori information have to make a very strange set of dances almost like two birds in a mating dance / female spider will eat the male mate after copulating and can you escape WITHOUT actually being eaten.

Let me explain...

Fencer 1 has his/her own 'A' game (the thing that they are awesome at.).

Fencer 2 ALSO has his or her own bestist A game but it's not the same as Fencer 1's 'A" game.

But they also generally have their own respective B games..
.
The goal being is to take away someone's A game (and there are many techniques for that) so that your opponent HAS to or is forced to use their weaker B game and one get's to use one's A game best strength and set of tactics against a theoretically "Better" opponent.

Here's the catch...
.
BOTH of the fencers (player 1 and player 2) generally don't want to give away or telegraph what each respective fencers A game actually is.
.
So there is a time limit and you have very little time to the principal task to try and find out what it IS that your opponent is wanting to do.
.
All the time - your opponent is trying to HIDE what they really want to do...
.
And because there is a non-combativity rule more recently introduced ( to me that really wrecked the game in Epee fencing)
.
You have to interact and be seen as fighting by the judge etc. (But the rules changed to make it more of a spectator sport as they thought two fencers NOT making cartoonish Erol Flyn type moves was bad for business especially when the two fencers face each other off making weird moves trying to psyche each other out and after five or ten minutes no one has made a hit <--- another example of money ruining what otherwise would have been an excellent sport.].
.
So you have to go through a whole bunch of moves to get the opponent to react and react instinctively to give glimmers as to what their A game in the context you provide is likely to be.
.
Your opponent is ALSO trying to trigger and find out what it is you are actually wanting to do...
.
All this probing to NOT give away or telegraph one's actual intentions...
.
That is until things really heat up.

This is why techniques that apply pressure to your opponent and then suddenly break off...
.
and then apply pressure again (almost within sticking distance/ "Opportunity" distance where one could have made the hit...)

And then break off - retreat ...

The opponent then get's so frustrated they strike out of distance and do something really stupid revealing their set of A game "material".

Usually some people's A game relies on bullying and if you mirror what they are doing (if they are being super aggressive) they are never used to being challenged that way they actually crumble <--- This is true (way beyond simple or stupid notions about bullies) it's more about familiarity of one's own practices - if you are more familiar and used to people cowering and running away you are MORE practiced at dealing with that ... If the opponent mirrors and copies a very aggressive (A game) style then that puts the 'bully" into an un-rehearsed or less well practiced set of moves --- put onto the back foot literally even if one is doing a really bad impression of your opponent's mirrored A game - it basically brings about a total reframe of the situation that the opponent can't deal with mainly due to lack of personal experience of having to "Deal" with that. A literal afront to their "Sensibilities".

THEN that's when you find your opponent is having to reach for their B game and they are not very well practiced at it... (There's a lot of theory that states that one should not even have a B game and one should full up into one's A game etc.).

That's when you fully apply your "A" game in brutal and clinical fashion.

In the older rules one was able to remove one's arm completely, drop the weapon out of the opportunity volume and space, but instead hold the weapon close to the ground and close to the body so they - your opponents would have absolute no idea where you would be coming in from (especially with what's known as extremely efficient one move bell-guard technique that eliminates at least three moves. ) ...

[TBH some peeps that go into the military can have a bunch of screws loose that they had to begin with that only gets far worse from combat / high stress situations from endless rotations and crude training. In this case I think the dynamic was extreme familial abuse from the guy's father - having observed at a distance at another compettition. ].

Serious protracted assault ... but I just got up to my feet and came on guard and didn't bat an eyelid - and suggested (very calmly) we finish the bout - the score was 3 - 1. I got to my feet like one of those toys that has cylindrical base and plunger you push with your thumb and release so that the small puppet like figure (like Bullseye the horse from Pixar _Toy Story) comes to a stationary and erect position as if standing to attention from a previously sprawled out position with janky bits of loose string connecting each joint and piece of limb and torso all over the place. The USAF generally tends to have an 'Ego" problem and historically I have had much more in common with 'Peeps" in the Army, the Marines and especially Navy there's just something about the USAF that has them walking with an extra broom stick stuck up their crack - like a particular swagger that's just not really working out for them.

The fencing club was owned by a woman X Olympian trying to make ends meet in the Duke's City while looking after a very distant blind mother in New York.

Normally you'd get kicked out of the club for that for six months but the club owner really needed the money and also four of his children also fenced there (A ton of money for struggling club) ... The guy is pretty tall and massive and a LEFT hander and a good / capable fencer.
