Of the many ... 'problems'(?) of the current adminstration, this one is very disturbing. Hegseth so lacks ANY kind of maturity and wisdom as to leave him completely unqualified (which we knew, and several senators must answer for). The U.S. has been for 80 years the leader of the free world. Today, its military might is in the hands of a sophomoric frat boy and his boss, who thinks manliness consists in being abusive of the less powerful and weak, yet who cowers in front of despots, and is intimidated by anyone of actual character. The shame and disgrace are bad enough but the implications of these two being in charge of the United States military! I believe there are a lot of men and women of character serving and acting as a gyroscopic force to keep an even keel. But this is a very dangerous corruption of ideals going from the top.
Note also the tone and style of CENTCOMs press releases during this war with Iran. They read like they are written at Mar A Lago by an overexcited junior Trump staffer. Disturbingly unprofessional.
A relative of mine is a career Navy officer — USNA graduate, has served 20+ years active duty, and has attained a higher rank than Hegseth ever did. He is on track to receive a promotion later this year as well.
But I don’t think he’s qualified to serve as Secretary of Defense (yes, it’s Defense. Congress has never changed it), and both he and his wife would agree. Then again, he is also a serious person who never had a TV stint at Fox News, so in Trump world he doesn’t make the grade.

Manliness is doing the right thing, no matter how difficult, all the time. Including looking out for the weak and defenseless. Simple rule. It only gets difficult when we get down to the nut-cutting.
Every thing you outline, Jay, proves that nobody in this Administration is a serious person. They are all having a good time -- at our expense. It will take years to clean-up this mess.
Niagara Falls. July 1985. An 11 year old boy is standing out his grandmother’s apartment. It’s right across the street from Niagara Falls airport where the Blue Angels just began their performance. Shortly into it, the lead and opposing solos begin a maneuver. They approach each other from opposite ends of the field. Low altitude and inverted. Smoke on. They pass close right in front of the crowd midfield. Then they “push” (stick forward to make an upside down jet climb) into a loop. They are belly to belly to each other through the loop. At the top, it looks really close. The boy thinks to himself, it’s just an illusion. And then a bright flash. The sky is full of debris. An A-4 Skyhawk is missing its tail and flat spinning towards us. The canopy comes off. The seat comes out. The chute inflates. The airplane hits the ground right across the street from where the boy is standing and explodes with the force of a bomb. The pilot lands next to it and balls up his parachute. Runs like hell. Even after all that, the boy looks skyward to see another parachute. There isn’t one. But there’s the other Skyhawk. Something is wrong with the nose. It looks broken. Maybe he’s still with it? Flying away from the crowd? But it’s not really flying as much as falling like an autumn leaf. It’s at treetops now. Eject! EJECT!!! Nothing. Then fireball.
The rules are written in blood. Carry that, patriot.
