For President Trump to tell his followers, (and the public), that Senator Kelly ought to be executed, knowing that 15 years earlier his wife was shot in the head while she was serving in Congress in an attempted assassination, is a mind-boggling level of depravity.

I am grateful that Senator Kelly is standing firm with American values of freedom and lawful government. We need more Mark Kelly’s to set things right once the current political madness has passed.

Senator Kelly is an honorable man. I'm sure he will make Americans proud.

Sir, this is Substack. You’re looking for X, which is the preferred app for thoughtless sniping & abuse.

Or, you can stay, and explain in logical and well-referenced terms how a highly decorated Navy test pilot and astronaut with degrees in marine engineering and aeronautical engineering, who earned the rank of Captain, who has flown over 50 different aircraft, made 375 carrier landings, flown 39 combat missions, and been trusted to command 3 space missions and pilot 2 others, and who is now defending our Constitution as a US Senator is, as you say, “an idiot.”

Mark Kelly for president.

I agree and his name is never on a list of potential Democratic candidates. In my opinion, he represents what true American values are.

What have you accomplished in life? Now compare your accomplishments to Senator Kelly's.

Chahagen's avatar

I think that the commenter (FM) already has done that comparison and that is why he is so angry.

Trump is the idiot, and he's scared that when he loses his backers in November he'll be removed from office!

Just another bot. No sensible real person could make such an idiotic comment about a true American hero

Please tell me how it's possible for an astronaut with so much experience - military, political, scientific, and even “street” - to be an idiot. I have the time; i’m waiting, but I also have a suggestion. Read.

Thank you, Mark Kelly, for speaking out against the darkness and tyranny of a mad mad out to destroy our country and democracy. Bravo!

Mark Kelly for president? I could get behind that.

Senator Kelly appears to possess all the qualities that are so sorely lacking in this “administration”.

Sec of Defense, Secretary of State? I don't see Capt. Kelly as a viable President for at least another cycle or two. And that is only if he starts playing the game.

Don't get me wrong I love Mark. I knew him personally many years ago. I think he is an upstanding guy. The climate is not right for him yet.

He will have a lot to bring to the Democratic Presidential Primary Debates. The more people like Mark on the stage will push the party to raise the bar. I am looking forward to watching his campaign if he does choose to seek the nomination.

I view Mark Kelly as a military man/scientist, in my opinion, certainly with the know-how to prevent a nuclear war, while surrounding himself with those successful enough in their various professions, e.g. foreign policy, legal, geological, scientific, etc. to offer the sound advice he'd likely accept (rather than "going with the unhealthy gut.") Besides displaying sobriety and intelligence, the man is dedicated to a sound, healthy atmosphere, literally and figuratively, for all living entities on Earth and beyond. We need a radical switch from the present cowards warming seats in both chambers. We need balls and brains. I believe the guy can do it.

Senator Kelly is what a man of honor and integrity looks like. Those clowns in the Trump administration are corrupt sociopaths. Some of the American people know the difference.

Real_BlackbirdFlyin's avatar

He may not have the answers… but a person of integrity will always seek the better good.

vs. what we have now, which is a complete and utter lack of any integrity. Which always leads to corruption and deceit.

TheLibraryPolice's avatar

But if he doesn't have the answers, he's exactly the man to seek and accept the right ones.

Senator Kelly is right to sound the alarm.

The deepest issue is not simply whether one side wins or loses politically. It is whether the loadbearing elements of democracy still hold under pressure.

Democracy depends on structures that are easy to take for granted until they crack:

free speech,

an independent justice system,

peaceful criticism of government,

constitutional loyalty above personal loyalty,

the right of elected representatives to oppose executive power,

and the refusal to treat dissent as treason.

These are not decorative ideals. They are the hidden beams of the democratic house.

Once the justice system is used to punish opponents, once criticism is reclassified as betrayal, once loyalty to a leader begins to replace loyalty to law, democracy does not collapse all at once. It hollows out from within. The forms remain — elections, courts, speeches, flags — but the stabilising ecology has begun to fail.

That is why Senator Kelly’s warning matters. He is not merely defending himself. He is defending the principle that no republic can survive if power is allowed to criminalise lawful opposition. The real test of democracy is not whether people praise it in calm times, but whether its loadbearing constraints still restrain power when power feels threatened.

For anyone who cares about public lands, wildlife habitat and irreplaceable cultural landscapes, this should be deeply concerning. Once these places are damaged, they do not come back.

The Financial World Of The Nazi Republicans

In a small “d” democratic republic the purpose of the government is to serve the people WE the People are to be helped by the government WE form In Nazi Republican terms the government is a bank account for those in power to loot the government and insure that the rich and their wealth is protected because they refuse to pull their societal weight financially So called “christian principles” of taking care of neighbor is overridden by “I’ve got mine, so get lost” mentality or “no more freeloaders(Reagan’s welfare queen)”

Reagan and the his Nazi allies created the bogus “trickle down” economic theory to perpetrate a financial hoax for their followers that giving tax breaks to the rich in the country would bring economic gains for the middle class This premise has been proven wrong and has brought about a hollowing out of the middle class today Of course Cheeto has continued this hoax with even greater tax cuts hoping that will help consolidate power from his rich cronies he’s protected in the Epstein-Trump files fiasco

The Nazis do this economic slight of hand trick by robbing from government agencies and stopping government financial commitments eg USAID to pad their own pockets now with tax cuts and blatant out in the open corruption for everyone to see They don’t even care about trying to cover up the corruption anymore At least in the Reagan years the wealthy covered it up with a cutesy made up economic theory

And now with this greed of the wealthy supported by the Nazi Republicans, We the People have become a debtor nation in decline with an insurmountable $39T debt These bastards should never see another public office for decades!

First of all, Senator Kelly thank you for your bravery and speaking out against this criminal regime. Second of all there weren’t many people that could’ve filled John McCain’s shoes, but I must say you’ve done a fantastic job of that and he would be honored.

How low we have fallen into the autocratic trap, and the money surrounding and supporting this autocracy is chilling. We need all good men to come to the aid of their country, & this is an example of who we need. Thank you, for both of your voices.
