“Bravery”? I thought the piece was good, worthwhile. But “brave”?! My suggestion- delete all social media, and just live your best life. Social media is a waste of your time…
Fascinating and moving. Mobs of uncomprehending dolts are the worst, especially when they have some good credentials that should alert them to be much more careful about their claims!
Thank you for this guest essay, David. The virulence of some posters--either unbalanced, or simply seemingly terminally angry--is terrifying. I am sorry that you had to learn how people could be craven when you were failed by those who had a moral duty to defend you in that moment.
A very powerful post. Thank you. We are new to Seattle area, and want to feel they make appropriate editorial decisions....but that is just SICK. As my grandson just 'invented' the miracle of walking too.. I understand every word.
I may buy him some green socks.. after I send your column to my daughter.
I'm so sorry you went through this and appreciate your telling this cautionary tale. I believe liberals need to take a close look at ourselves in seeking the root causes of the disastrous Trump era. This urge to find someone to purge, together with a disdain for those seen as uncultured, is a fair part of it. It wouldn't be so easy for Trump and his predecessors to whip up rage and moral panics many of the most vocal liberals weren't so self-righteous, obnoxious, and thoughtless.
You see this take down culture everywhere these days. For example, all the pundits and online personalities who took such glee in seeing Timothee Chalamet and Marty Supreme not get any Oscars. I don't understand it at all. All of them competing to see who can post the most cutting comment, without any regard to the actor's accomplishments, the labor of love he put into the film as a producer, the other actors in the film, the fact that the film based on a real character, and the moral arc of the film that's apparent to me at least.
I also think everyone should see Melania, which I believe is subversive (in addition to being a bribe in plain site). MAGAs should see that Trump is part of the elite. Everyone else can relish the ironies revealed, such as Brigitte Macron welcoming Melania back to the sisterhood of first ladies only a few months before Trump accused her of being a cross-dressing man, followed by the Macrons suing Trump for defamation. And the more observant viewer might well wonder what else Melania's former Communist Party father has on his home video camera. All hidden by critics competing with each other to snub the film.
Wow! What a story! My takeaway is that Elon's Twitter buried you in sh*t and got you fired from your job (literally X-ed you) with a baby and a mortgage, and then Elon himself came to "offer help"! Oh, the irony and the times we live in! Also, WHY IN THE WORLD IS THERE A STATUE OF LENIN IN THE USA?! Ok, I read the original article and get it, but if it's on private property you cannot really do much about it. Like I had the gut-wrentching urge to burn my neighbor's Nazi flag every time I drove past it, but couldn't do anything about it, as it was on his property. And then the school children who were dropped off at the bus stop next to it could maybe ask what it means and hopefully read about it more. So let people desecrate Lenin's statue and draw attention to his legacy of violence and genocide. Good for you to find a better job free of some corporate BS.
Also, did you write the last paragraph without the help of AI? Cause it shows. Just MHO
Eric B. Lang's spamming of this board makes me wonder when Substack intends to introduce blocking people (bots?) so that their noise doesn't contaminate an otherwise interesting discussion.
I suppose it's meant to be verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry mild satire that is imperceptible from Navaho White to - bone white to South West very light beige as being satirical - BEING the current fashion amongst the podsters... and Instas...

It's not an essay it's an excerpt from an upcoming book.
.
I think this is what I am primarily frustrated about as an excerpt performs extremely POORY in the guise of promotional material OR an actual essay.
.
I guess if you haven't finished the book then it's hard to write useful promotional high level material.

I dunno man- it's just not "Great" for the what is it...

Thank you for your honesty, bravery, and willingness to share. When otherwise intelligent and reasonable people turn morally ugly, this is the result.

I'm not even getting into the deliberately constructed (rage baiting) paradoxes that social media companies make money from.
.
OR that whataboutism arguments for the most part need to be crossed out.
.
So much destructive currency built from idiotic paradoxes posed by total "Posers".
.
🥱

These chatbots are really excellent at triangulation and maintaining the status quo.

You know the "Radicalist" ---> "Memoirs of an American Dissident."

Did I spell that right ?
.
I believe the minimum rate would be of the order of $750.00
.
So WHY don't "They" pay David to write an actual essay ?
