Curious about my ancestors, I traced them back. The first came on the second voyage of the Mayflower. The last to arrive in the US was in the late 1700's. I guess that I qualify as a so-called heritage American. But let me say point blank, I reject the term and its isolationist connotation. The best have long come to these shores for the opportunity it gave them and it has continued that way up to the present. But the best are not necessarily the wealthiest. A person's worth are intrinsically what they are as an individual. What they bring to the commonweal is.
Humankind just can’t seem to find a way to coexist. Language, ethnicity, religion, sex, skin tones, birth cohorts (boomer, millennial, etc.), country of origin, economic philosophy, political philosophy, wealth status, job status, province/State, educational attainment, ball teams, and who here first, a NYC “Co-Op” (ha,ha,ha what an oxymoron) or a suburban HOA, ad infinitum, we will find a way to argue over shit.
Well stated, as always, Jay. My wife and I are both the grandchildren, and on her side, the child of immigrants. Maybe I'm "just asking questions" (Oy), but why can't anyone who accepts the American idea, or creed, if you will, which you nicely dilated on a bit above, become an American? We have a heritage, and it isn't "blood." That said, I do believe the presence here of immigrants who adhere to Islamist beliefs and refuse to become Americans, who wish to import Koranic laws and customs, are an increasingly imminent danger. Something must be done. I'm not sure exactly what to do, other than to insist whatever said response is, it must comport with the Constitution. Beyond that...but I do believe time is running out for us, especially for Americans who are Jewish. We've already seen enough bloodshed, and I have no desire to recreate Bondi Beach at Coney Island. What do you think?

IIRC Bailyn considered a particular English sensibility (_not_ Englishness _per se_) to be the foundation of American culture. He did not consider immigrants from England to be the only real Americans. We all know what the _terminus ad quem_ of Tucker Carlson's or JD Vance's nativism really: they should be allowed to determine to what degree someone with Ashkenazi or African ancestry counts as American.
