As the former, now retired, editor in chief of a Ukrainian-language newspaper, I am grateful that Gary Kasparov still has the presence of mind for outrage. What is scarier for me is that after reading his Substack post, I asked myself why was I not more outraged after I read the same piece, just routinely irritated? Do I really expect so little of the NYT editorially? Am I cynical about the money aspect - the photographer/reporter received some kind of grant for "objective reporting about russia" from a foundation ( for all we know, is a three times removed money-laundering operation for a pro-Putin oligarch) and the NYT was OK, great, you have a grant, all expenses paid for by someone else and we must, after all, present different sides of a story, even if one side is filled with misinformation and lies? Anyhoo.... Thank you, Mr. Kasparov for reminding us that if we begin to accept lies as normal, "alternate facts" as just the "other side" of the same story, just "another perspective" then we will be living in 1984.
Now that FINALLY Garry’s eyes got opened, perhaps he may want to reread all the other complete and utter BS, called LIES, Garry has been going along with in all the years prior to the article that opened his mind?
How many times we attempted to open Garry’s eyes wide shut to All The Lies Fit To Print?
Thank you for this. I had earlier read the headline of this NYT article, raised an eyebrow at the pro-Russian wording, and decided to skip it as a likely example of their both-sidesism. I'm kind of proud of the effectiveness of my BS detector in this case.
Your use of the phrase "the size of Minneapolis" to describe Mariupol was profoundly striking to me, giving a much clearer view for me, as an American, of the scale of what happened there. I have a horribly American view of the cosmopolitan superiority of the United States, even though I've done some world travel and seen many vibrant global cities. But still when I hear of a foreign town that I know nothing about, I envision a medieval farming village, for no good reason. I'm ashamed of that, and will try to do better.
So if the question is Why have the New York Times editors failed to edit this reporter's dispatch? Then we have to look at the Times' record. Yes, the NYT has a mixed history, elevating the Clinton email story above and beyond real public policy questions, not catching but continuing to publish a reporter's plagiarized work, yes, they published Judith Miller's articles about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction despite Miller's so-called sources being fabrications. So the answer to the question Why is "Because that's the way the Times rolls." So what can be done about the Times' failure of its duty to the public?
Cheeto told a prayer breakfast audience today that he’s ready to get rid of the separation of Church and State, a defining principle of the US Constitution
As Hitler said in 1929, “We tolerate no one in our ranks who attacks the ideals of Christianity. Our movement is Christian.”
Of course this has nothing to do with separation of Church and State It has everything to do with gaining a portal of entry for Cheeto’s Nazi driven Christian Nationalist movement that the right has supported with the likes of Viktor Orban, Hungary’s dictator who has visited CPAC a couple of times and been a keynote speaker The Project 2025 playbook is to get the government to become a Christian Nationalist movement attendant with all its agenda including doing away with Women’s Reproductive Rights and abortion
It would be hard to find a group of people doing more harm to the ideals of Christianity than this group. Power not scripture is their justification. Like the party they serve, whatever lie works. It takes some real twisted logic to reach "empathy is weakness" by way of "when I was hungry..."
Thank you for your sharp commentary! This NYT article is a reminder of how dangerously effective media framing can be. With the right language and omissions, even well-educated readers can be steered toward a story that serves agenda more than truth, despite the facts, history, and reality!
According to historian Giles Milton on the podcast, “We have ways of making you talk,” a podcast by historian James Holland and Al Murray, Stalin charmed and hoodwinked Churchill and Roosevelt with gracious words, courtesy, empathy, charm, warmth, humor, and kindness. Stalin was a cold blooded mass murderer of unprecedented cynicism. He was most likely a sociopath.
Thank you for CARING about TRUTH. Many ‘trust’ the New York Times, and sometimes are lulled into a sense of ‘compromise’ with Putin. As you so knowingly remind the reader, PUTIN is THE AGGRESSOR, & directly or indirectly guilty for the deaths of both Russian and Ukrainian victims in this War
The NYT and BBC both have been passing along axis propaganda for a while now. It's generally best to just avoid "breaking news" and watch a summary of Ukraine war territory movements, interviews etc. a month or two later on YouTube when you won't feel the unhinged social media urgency.

My guess is this is being driven by subconscious reflexive opposition to Trump’s ever-so-slight verbal pivot towards Ukraine.
It has been painful seeing journalists, definitely at the NYT especially, framing new developments in Ukraine with unwarranted skepticism, under the guise of journalistic due diligence. Long held truths as previously reported by the New York Times are now coming under question from their own damn journalists.
I can’t help but fear how Mamdani’s supporters have poisoned their ability to report with integrity. Garry, I hope you are waking up to who the true “Blue MAGA” is. It’s not Biden’s gang. It’s the populist left. They do not care about Ukraine. Whatsoever.
Ukraine continues to enjoy overwhelming support from the vast majority of Senate and House Democrats—unlike many of their R counterparts, they actually walk the walk (ie with votes not just rhetoric). I can’t speak for Mamdani

The NYT is surviving on its restaurant reviews, the sports and social, and its word games. But its a public service to call them out...

Orange Cheeto and Christian Nationalism

Wake up NYT. Quit putting Russian propaganda in your publications.
Hahaha only Russian propaganda is not ok? All others are ok?

The NYT has a long history of misreading the room. From Hitler's rise, to the Iraq War drums, Hillary's e-mails, transgender safety...
Thank you, Garry Kimovich, for this brutally honest article. Shame on NYT, we’ve got to be wary of corporate media these days.
Sigh.
