In the Deep South, Humphrey outran Nixon in three states and was just 2,000 votes behind him in Arkansas. But there was also the presence of George Wallace, who whipped up the segregationist vote in the south and served as a spoiler in multiple northern states where he got nearly 10% of the vote!
Look, Nixon didn't win by himself. MAGA doesn't win on its own. Trump just needs a decent enough wedge through the malleable center of the political spectrum to get a critical mass of voters who feel the Democrats have gone too far to the left. If it is, the votes will come, and that positivity will overwhelm whatever agitprop the GOP throws out. Given, it’s a big issue, and maybe it can’t be fixed easily, but it can’t be ignored. And tacking toward “the center” will assure the issue gets ignored. In my opinion, anyway.
