Agree on this one, but that's how Democrats operate - they don't whip people in line with threats and punishment, like the GOP. There is a silver lining in this move though - we know that Republicans would have kept the government shut down forever, it did not affect them personally so what do they care that people literally start dying on the streets. That said, now they have no choice but to go back into session and swear in Adelina Grijalva and release the Epstein files. By now we know that the regime has redacted all the instances that Trump's name is in the files but there is always an unredacted copy somewhere and someone has it. One is held by Putin for sure, including all the incriminating video and audio (we know Epstein had cameras all over the place). It's just a matter of time that one gets leaked to a major media. It might just be the redeeming consequence of today's Senate Democrats debacle.
What can I say. I feel sad. Really sad. Such a shame our Dem. Senators are such cowards. No matter whatever they say they are cowards or just have their own self-interest at heart. Not easy to find joy when the Dems add to the disappointment. Thanks, Garry Kasparov for caring about us here in the USA. You are right. We will need to come into the New Year ready to fight.
Ah~"all", too broad and inclusive. I agree not all Democrats--and not all Democrat Senators and House members our cowards. Sometimes sadness and anger get in the way of clear thought. 😔
The Der Fuhrer Cheeto is pardoning everyone he can find Like his buddy Putin who has let all the criminals out of prison so he can send them to the Ukraine front lines, Cheeto figures he can do the same thing and send his to the voting booths and get some voter support Small numbers but they still are countable votes Classic quid pro quo which has been the GOP/Nazi MO(modus operandi) since the Reagan years
The abuse of the pardoning power is now in full tilt First it was the J6’ers and even some of them went on record to say they didn’t feel the pardon was appropriate Recently election deniers like Guiliani, Meadows, Powell got pardons The purpose was to rewrite Cheeto’s election interference story But let’s be clear, each pardon represents a sphere of voter influence
Then there have been what could be called “corporate pardons” like the one Cheeto used for his crypto currency friend CZ, CEO of Binance, the largest cryptocurrency currency exchange This pardon has not only the “vote” if there is one, but better yet, an ingratiating feel of “you rub my back, I’ll rub yours”
And why would we expect anything more from this corrupt, evil, depraved, arrogant, deranged malignant narcissist? This sick mind is nothing more than a transactional psychotic sociopath Perhaps the American electorate thought that Cheeto would make government work for them but he lied of course and they got a classic transactional Republican All for votes!!
Schumer needs to be outed as minority leader in any case. He’s not on message and working counter to congressional Dems. I’d like Van Hollen or Chris Murphy.
Let's make sure this is properly framed. Senators having compassion for their constituents is never a bad thing in and of itself. The only reason people have grounds for disagreement with Kaine and Co I'm this situation is because the majority decided to subject millions of Americans to financial torture, and these eight, who hold those Americans' lives in their hands, couldn't bear the moral strain.
Suboptimal situation? Sure. But don't call these senators the bad guys.
Gary, I normally agree with you but you could not be more wrong here. Government shutdowns never work and never achieve anything and their signs of impotence. It's not the way to do business. Look at no labels which is not a fan of trump nor the far left and they are very much against any shutdown and prefer forced. For reasons that are obvious. If you pushed much harder, they could have done away with the filibuster which would have been a far worse decision. These situations call for compromise which is not anywhere on the agenda and the seven or eight Democrats and guys like federman who I really respect realize that.
"I know that government employees are suffering..."If you work for the federal government and you are one paycheck away from homelessness you aren't smart enough to work for the federal government.
So hang on a minute, let’s actually think this thing through.
(1) Reality check: the ACA subsidies expire, under the law now on the books, on December 31 2025. So the GOP does not have to do anything to get rid of those, they can just sit on their hands and “oh well look what happened what a shame (shrug) well who knows how that happened”, etc. That’s every political party’s happy place — always and everywhere since the invention of political parties — regarding something they’d like to kill off but millions of voters will miss.
(2) If on the other hand the Senate holds a roll-call vote on that a month from now, and the GOP votes it down over the votes of every Senate Dem…then everyone who depends on the ACA for healthcare knows unambiguously who’s screwed them. Or if the Senate GOP reneges on a publicly-agreed deal and refuses to have the vote…then everyone who depends on the ACA for healthcare knows unambiguously who’s screwed them.
(3) Meanwhile, the 42 million people served by SNAP no longer have their daily meals be a political bargaining chip since the current deal includes covering that specific cost; and
(4) federal workers, who overwhelmingly vote Democratic, receive back pay and are for at least a while protected from additional arbitrary layoffs; and
(5) this deal reopens the government only to Jan 30, a date that will be closer to the next national election meaning public-opinion swings will matter that much more to the entire House and 1/3rd of the Senate who are up for re-election; and
(6) Mike Johnson now has to call the House back into session which means the new Dem representative gets sworn in which he hates for other reasons.
Far from an ideal set of outcomes, which is hardly unsurprising for a party that got its hat comprehensively handed to it in the last national election. [I trust that nobody’s being silly enough to view last week’s much-smaller election results plus a month’s worth of polls as having fully countered the GOP’s actual national win.] You play the cards you’ve got not the ones you wish you had.
Overall if a Senate party got played here it ain’t the Dems.
P.S. Gonna be reeeally special if the Speaker can’t corral quite enough votes to pass this deal in the House, rendering all the online pearl-clutching meaningless anyway. Which surely isn’t likely but…if some online betting place offers single-digit odds on that I’d appreciate a pointer to where I can get some cash down.
P.P.S. It’s absolutely true, as a thousand pundits are writing here and everywhere else, that the Dems “have no overall strategy for fighting back against Trump II”. In this way the Congressional Dems are perfectly representing their core voters, who energetically continue to be Trump’s electoral secret sauce.
In my opinion that is the wedge that the democrats should be using.
Telling the entire United States that the Republicans I think are on their 5th CR clean or dirty doesn't matter.
these people can't pass a budget a proper one that lasts 9 months to a year they should be advertising that every single day on TV & internet say these guys do little drips of coverage for the budget because

I’ll believe it when I see it! You want to know how to negotiate with a tyrant? You don’t. The tyrant wins unless you hold your ground.
Every sitting member of Congress needs a primary challenge, especially these twerps who caved in yesterday.
Trump will veto release of the Epstein files. 100%.
The truth is apparently too damaging to him.
And he will pardon Maxwell so that she will exonerate him.

No matter how badly the Republican Party is doing in an electoral battle, they can always rely on their ace in the hole. The Democratic Party.

Sorry I left out a word. I meant to say we need to force and what this was meant to do was Force bipartisanship which we sort of got at the end

No enthusiasm for the standard fare capitulation of the centrist Dems today?
Perhaps Mr. Kasparov is warming up to the fight and integrity exhibited by progressive leftists like Mamdani..
I didn't think it was possible to use Mamdani and integrity in the same sentence
Either that was a sick burn or you’re a Zionist terrorist douche bag.. (hint: that was an ad hominem attack, not a sick burn..)
Stay classy San Diego. Your own words reveal the prick you are.
